Welcoming 2024 with much excitement! As we roll into the new year I first reflect on the moments that made 2023 unforgettable. Adding gravel to my calendar opened up many new experiences, and nearly every competition felt like a fresh adventure. After many years of racing the same events it was a completely different story in 2023, each event offered new competition, a new location, and a fresh set of people to make friends with. What an incredible journey it has been!
There were moments of challenge too. Missing some big summer races like the National and World Marathon Champs due to illness was hugely disappointing. And let's not forget the mechanical hiccups that added unexpected problems at Euro Marathon Champs and National Gravel Champs.
The highs far outweighed the lows. The joy of completing the Hotchillee Stone Circle after an absolutely epic day, sprinting for the fastest time at Dirty Reiver, seeing coaching clients flourish at our fully supported Belgian race camp, racing round the Hekla volcano at the Rift in Iceland, attacking off the front of the race with Alejandro Valverde at Ranxo Gravel, flying down the sand at Battle on the Beach… And then there’s the countless training days on our home training grounds which we love each and every day. It’s these highs that make every pedal stroke worthwhile.
I’m excited to share my calendar for the upcoming year, filled with a blend of new events and favourites. Highlights include February’s Santa Val stage race which should be a great way to kick off the year. In May I’ll be back in Girona for the Traka, mainland Europe’s biggest gravel event. Then in July I’ll be back in Iceland for another unforgettable cycling experience at the Rift. In September National Marathon Champs returns to Kielder where I last won a National title in 2022.
